Measuring a product is not as hard as it may seem, and it’s a rather important skill to learn especially if you’re a beginner or running a business that ships products. This guide covers all the basics including measuring techniques, calculating cubic size, and some essential shipping considerations you should keep in mind before sending off your product to a customer.

Accurate box measurement is crucial for keeping your shipping costs low and making sure that everything goes smoothly when you’re packing and shipping boxes.

Learn a simple and effective way to measure a product. Our easy-to-follow steps will make the process a breeze for you.

Measurement For A Rectangular Product

To measure a rectangular product, you need to find three basic measurements. These measures are fundamental for all rectangular products:

  1. Length
  2. Width
  3. Depth/Height

Make sure you accurately measure each dimension to determine the appropriate size of the box needed for shipping or storage.

Length: The longest side of the product describes its length. You can either measure it with inches of tape or a scale. If you are measuring it with a scale, place the longest side of the product on a plain surface and mark the digits that appear on a scale with a pen or pencil.

Width:  Rotate the product to 90 degrees and measure the distance with the scale from the front of the product to its back and note it down.

Height: Measure the distance from the base of the box to the top, along the vertical side.

If you want to make sure your packaging fits your rectangular product just right, you need to add 2mm or 0.078 inches to each of your three measurements.

Easy Steps To Measure The Cylindrical Object

Measuring the dimensions of a cylindrical object is a little hard, but we are here to guide you with simple steps. Just like measuring a rectangular object, you need three measurements – length, width, and height.

The Vernier caliper is the perfect tool to measure the dimensions of a cylindrical object, but if you don’t have one, you can use inches of tape or a scale.

Length: Place the object on a flat surface, and measure the distance from the bottom right corner to the bottom left.

Width: Measure the width of your object by measuring the distance between the bottom right and bottom left corners.

Height: To measure the height of your cylindrical object, lay it on a flat surface and measure the distance from the bottom to the top.

Once you have all three dimensions, add a 2 mm margin on each side, which is equivalent to 0.0787 inches. And voila, you’ll have the perfect packaging for your cylindrical object!
