How to Measure Product Dimensions

Accurate product dimensions can be crucial because they directly affect many factors. A few millimeters off can mean its packaging will not fit it properly, higher shipping costs if you need to deliver it, higher-than-expected shipping charges, or, in some cases, wrong product listings that confuse customers.

Whether you are ordering custom packaging for your product, calculating shipping costs with carriers, or uploading dimensions to platforms like Amazon or Etsy, precision protects you from long-term risks.

Incorrect sizing leads to shifting during transit, dimensional weight, and avoidable returns. At the same time, taking the time to measure correctly prevents those issues before they start. Tools You Will Need to Measure Your Product Dimensions

Before you start measuring your product, gather the right tools. You do not need any expensive equipment, but you do need some professional tools to get accurate results. Otherwise, slight off measurements can create problems later.

  • Standard ruler 

A ruler we commonly use for stationery, often made of wood, steel, or plastic, works well for small products with straight edges, such as books or flat items. It is simple with cm and inch units that are enough for most rectangular shapes. 

  • Flexible measuring tape 

These tapes are useful for larger items or products with curves. If something is not perfectly straight, a tape measure can wrap around it more easily than a rigid ruler. 

  • Vernier caliper/Digital caliper 

A digital caliper is best when precision really matters, especially for small parts, bottles, or even cylindrical items. It measures down to very small spaces and reduces guessing. 

Now that you have the right tool, you are good to measure the most common product shapes and some irregular ones. 

How To Measure Rectangular Products

Any product that looks like a cube, a flat, or a rectangular shape falls into this category. If your item has straight edges and sits flat on a surface, use this method. Here, calculating length, width, and height will also be clear and easy to measure.

Length (Longest Side)

Place your product on a flat table and look for its longest horizontal side. Now, place your ruler or tape at one end and extend it to the other. The number you get on the tape is your length (L).

Width (Front to Back)

Now measure the shorter horizontal side from front to back. Keep the tool straight, stick to the edge, and measure the front across the back. This measurement is your width (W).

Height (Bottom to Top)

Finally, measure from the bottom of the product to the highest point while it’s standing, as it will be packed. That is your height (H).

Make sure always to write measurements in L × W × H format

Not every object that you are working with will have 4 sides. If you are measuring a jar, bottle, tube, or can, you only need two measurements: diameter and height.

First, understand what a diameter is. It is the distance from one side of a circle to the other, measured along a straight line through the center. In simpler terms, a diameter is how wide the round part is from edge to edge.

To measure it, place the item upright and measure straight across the widest point, making sure it passes through the center. Do not assume the base is the widest part. Because in some cases, the lids extend beyond the base.

Next, measure the height from the bottom to the top while the product is standing straight. If you order a custom box for your product that includes a diameter, it will serve as both the length and the width. It means if the diameter is 70 mm, your box will start at 70 × 70 for the base.

Some products have neither straight edges nor diameters.

How to Measure Irregular or Oddly Shaped Products

If your product has handles, angles, curves, or any unusual extensions, it is completely obvious and normal to measure it.

Here, you can use the bounding box method for object detection.

It is a computer vision technique that identifies unusual-shaped objects enclosed in an imaginary border. Imagine the smallest rectangular box your product could fit into when placed in the position it will be shipped in. 

Now measure the length, height, and width of that imaginary box. Those are the dimensions to use when choosing its packaging. Always measure the product’s dimensions in its shipping orientation and not just the way it will look best on a table.

If your product has any handles or extensions, such as lids or spouts that stick out, include those parts in your measurement. But how exactly?

Measure from one end to the other, because nothing will be sticking out of the box once it is packed. If the shape feels difficult to measure, with bumps or weird-looking angles, here is a simple trick!

Place the product on a plain sheet of paper and trace around it. Then measure the widest part of the drawing from left to right and the longest part from front to back. After that, measure the height of the product separately.

Now that you have all three numbers, let’s make sure you’re using the correct unit.

Inches vs. Millimeters—Which Unit to Choose & When?

The most common units for measurements are inches and millimeters (mm). Before you submit your dimensions, decide which unit you are using, as the wrong unit can significantly alter the packaging size. 

  • If you are based in the United States and working with local packaging suppliers, inches are commonly used.
  • If you are working with international manufacturers or overseas suppliers, millimeters (mm) are usually preferred.

  • Shipping carriers may calculate dimensional weight using either system, so always check their guidelines.

If you’re unsure, ask your box manufacturer which unit they prefer. What matters most is consistency. Do not mix inches and millimeters in the same measurement.

1 inch = 25.4 mm
Multiply inches by 25.4 to convert to mm.
Divide millimeters by 25.4 to convert to inches.

Why Accurate Measurement Matters

When measurements are even slightly off, the problem shows up quickly. For instance, if a box is too large for a product, then the product will shift during shipping.

Movement increases the chance of impact damage. If a box is too small, the product may not fit at all, or, even worse, it may get squeezed inside.

Providing accurate product dimensions for shipping helps prevent unexpected carrier costs, as even a lightweight item in an oversized box can be charged based on dimensional weight.

Beyond shipping, inaccurate product dimensions can lead to errors in e-commerce listings, resulting in customer returns or negative reviews.

People buy what they see, and if the product they receive is huge but actually a miniature, it will lead to refunds and a bad image of your brand. 

Inside vs. Outside Box Dimensions

Another common mistake is getting confused about the internal and external dimensions of a box. Measuring a box externally is fine for a product, but it is not. 

  • The outside dimensions describe the total size of a finished box from edge to edge 
  • The inside dimensions describe the usable space inside the box where your product actually sits. 

Because packaging materials have different thickness ranges (corrugated cardboard is typically 3–5 mm thick, and paperboard is 0.008 to 0.048 inches, or 8 to 48 pt). 

When you order a custom box, manufacturers work with inside dimensions. If you provide outside measurements, the finished box may end up too tight for your product.

For maximum accuracy, add at least 2 mm to each side of the box so that the product fits comfortably; for fragile items, you can increase up to 10–15 mm to allow room for protective padding.

Even inserts and custom die-cuts depend on exact sizing. If measurements are off, the packaging won’t function as intended.
